Frikes – Voukenti – Platys Ammos (Afales) – Polis Beach.

Sea Kayak recommended route

For more experienced paddlers we recommend the beautiful route  from the fishing village of Frikes on the east coast of Ithaca to Polis beach, located on the west side of the island. Due to the strong north-western winds during the afternoon of the summer months, the paddler needs to possess all the skills of sea kayaking (at least BCU 3 star performance award ). The northwest bay, Afales, is one of the most spectacular places of the island, but a paddler should be careful when deciding to disembark from the kayak, due to the strong waves.

During the journey of 20 km, there are about 30 large and small beaches for resting, swimming and relaxing. Some points of interest are Marmakas Bay and the islet of Agios Nikolaos, Voukenti Beach, Áï-Giannis Cape, which is the northernmost point of the island, Platys Ammos and the small sea caves in the bay of Afales. There are breathtaking formations of huge rocks scattered in and out of the water, between the Gulf of Afales and Ammoudi beach. At the end of the route it is worth visiting the cave of Loizos in Polis Beach. The duration of this route ranges from 4 to 7 hours in a modern closed- deck kayak.
